Tutorial goal:
Creating an old mill picture using gradient layer, layer mask and layer channels.

step 1
The original source i started out with.

step 2
To create this kind of work you need a scan of a piece of old paper.
I did a Google search and found this piece long time ago. I have it for ages (you can tell by the look of it no? LOL) and I really
have no clue anymore where i got it from. If you do a google search for antique paper or simulair search terms you will be able to find one too.

step 3
Duplicate the mill layer and make the bottom layer invisible by clicking on the eye icon next to it.
Select the top layer with the mill and go to image ->adjustments->shadows/highlights and set the vallues like in the above example. ( you will see the result i got in the background picture) and click ok.

step 4
Next I changed the brightnes- contrast (can find that also under the image menu.)
I set the brightnes on -25 and the contrast on -50 as in the example above.
Click ok.

step 5
Then click on the black/white circle below the layers (1) and select gradient. (2) (make sure your fore and background color are
set as default black/white when you do this)
