Removing noise or grain in a Background

As an example I'll take a photo with a clean background but with a lot of noise. The picture beneath is perfect. It has a nice clean background and if you look at the crop you'll see lots of grain. (ISO640 and 1 stop underexposed)

A 100% crop makes the problem clearly visible. Pay attention to the fact that the noise is much more visible in the uniform area's than on the parts with detail (frog).

First we're going to remove some grain through a program. I use the Photoshop plugin version of Neat Image.

  1. Duplicate the background layer
  2. Rename that layer to 'neat image'
  3. Filter the 'neat image' layer with photoshop plugin "Neat Image".

In most cases the 'remove only weaker noise'-setting the best. But make sure you always check this at 100%.

The purpose of this is not to remove the artifacts in the background, but to remove some digital noise on the subject itself. We come to the background right away.

  1. Duplicate the 'neat image' layer and rename to 'blur'
  2. Select the background with the magic wand (experiment with the settings)
  3. Contract the selection by 3 px : select -> modify -> contract
(This to get a much smoother transition between the blurred background and the subject)
  4. Add a layer mask with this selection to the blur layer
If all went well, you should have the following layers
